Marseille, France
Marseille is perhaps one of France’s oldest gay meccas. A spirit of adventure fills the air no matter where you look. warm Mediterranean sunshine, where you may glimpse barechested sailors repairing their fishnets; to the coastal route leading out of town towards the Calanques, with its never-ending parade of scantily clad bathers, cyclists and joggers; to a traditional fish soup (bouillabaisse) at the Old Port (Le Vieux Port), as you witness a fisherman carrying a bulging basket of freshly caught fish straight through the restaurant to the chef.
Livorno, Italy
Livorno was defined as an "ideal town" during the Italian Renaissance. Today, it reveals its history through the structure of its neighbourhoods, crossed by canals and surrounded by fortified town walls, through the tangle of its streets, which embroider the town's Venice district, and through the Medici Port characteristically overlooked by towers and fortresses leading to the town centre. Designed by the architect Bernardo Buontalenti at the end of the 16th century, Livorno underwent a period of great town planning expansion at the end of the 17th century. Near the defensive pile of the Old Fortress, a new fortress, together with the town-walls and the system of navigable canals, was then built.
Naples, Italy
The city is known for its rich history, art, culture, architecture, music and gastronomy, playing an important role throughout much of its existence; it is over 2,800 years old. Naples is located halfway between two volcanic areas, the volcano Mount Vesuvius and the Phlegraean Fields, sitting on the coast by the Gulf of Naples.
Palermo, Sicily
The city is noted for its rich history, culture, architecture and gastronomy, playing an important role throughout much of its existence; it is over 2,700 years old. Palermo is located in the north west of the island of Sicily, right by the Gulf of Palermo in the Tyrrhenian Sea. Don't be misled: Sicilian men are often very affectionate, linking arms with one another and kissing on the cheeks to say hello or bid goodbye. This is how straight men behave, and such affection is not to be construed as overtly sexual.
Sousse, Tunisia
Located 140 km south of the capital Tunis, the city has 173 thousand inhabitants. Sousse is in the central-east of the country, on the Gulf of Hammamet, which is a part of the Mediterranean Sea. The city is the capital of Sousse Governorate. Its economy is based on transport equipment, processed food, olive oil, textiles and tourism. It is home to the Universit é de Sousse. These days, Sousse, retains a medieval heart of narrow, twisted streets, a kasbah and medina, its ribat fortress and long wall on the Mediterranean. Surrounding it is a modern city of long, straight roads and more widely spaced buildings.
Olbia, Sardinia
Olbia is located on the Costa Smeralda, one of the most beautiful stretches of coast on the Mediterranean. It is therefore a popular holiday destination for the rich and famous, but this fantastic area has much to offer the budget traveller also. A wild and rocky coast on the one hand, catering for the more active holidaymaker – excellent opportunities for hiking and climbing. On the other hand there are beautiful sandy beaches, ideal for long lazy days by the sea.
