Dublin to Waterford
Ireland gay tour - June Blake's GardenThis morning we begin our exploring of South and Western Ireland with a drive to Waterford.

Travel through Wicklow and stop to visit June Blake’s Garden
June Blake is a passionate plants person who grows from seeds sourced from all over the world, in her own extensive garden. The gardens are surrounded by majestic old beech and chestnut trees and in this sheltered environment she grows a unique mix of bamboos, ornamental grasses and perennials. Over the last fifteen years June Blake has created a garden of great character out of what was effectively a blank canvas: a garden that blends the familiar with the new, is inventive, dynamic and resonates with garden fans of all ages and backgrounds. The appeal lies in its size, just over 3 acres, design, variety and the fact that, just like we like to try at home, it is continually being tweaked. June herself will take us on a guided tour of the gardens.

Continue to Kilkenny for lunch under own arrangements.

Visit Kilkenny Castle
Ireland gay tour - Kilkenny Castle One of the most instantly recognized buildings in Ireland, Kilkenny Castle has been an important site since it was built by the Anglo-Normans in the 12th century. The castle has been remodeled in Victorian times and set in extensive parklands which was the principal seat of the Butler family, Marquesses and Dukes of Ormonde. Due to major restoration works, the central block now includes a library, drawing room, and bedrooms decorated in 1830’s splendor, as well as the beautiful Long Gallery. A suite of former servant’s rooms is now the Butler Art Gallery, which mounts frequently changing exhibitions of contemporary art.

Continue to Waterford and check in. Waterford Castle Resort is steeped in Irish history. It was the ancestral home of the Fitzgerald Family for 800 years. In 2015, the castle changed ownership and extensive refurbishments were carried out.

Waterford to Kerry
Ireland castles gay tour - Curraghmore HouseDepart our hotel in Waterford and travel to Kerry via Tipperary.

This morning we visit Curraghmore House, which is owned by the Marquis of Waterford and has been home to his ancestors since 1170. Some 2,500 acres of formal gardens, woodland and grazing fields make this the largest private demesne in Ireland and one of the finest places to visit in Ireland. The interior has exceptionally fine plasterwork and a guided tour of the main reception rooms of Curraghmore House can be arranged by prior appointment. This tour takes in some of the finest neo-classical rooms in Ireland which feature the magnificent plaster work of James Wyatt and grisaille panels by Peter de Gree. The superbly landscaped gardens beside Curraghmore House, incorporate a shell house, the interior of which was designed by Catherine, Countess of Tyrone, in 1754.

Next travel to Tipperary and visit Cahir Castle.
Ireland castles gay tour - Cahir Castle Superbly set on a rocky island in the River Suir in Cahir town, County Tipperary, this impressive 15th century castle – the largest of its period in Ireland – was considered impregnable until the advent of heavy cannon. Once the stronghold of the powerful Butler family, the castle retains its keep, tower and much of its original defensive structure. The origins of the castle are traced back to the third century when a Dun (earthen fort) was built upon the rocky island. This gave the town of Cahir its original name “Dun Iascaigh” (town of the fish fort).

Continue to Tralee and check into our hotel. The stunning Ballyseede Castle is County Kerry is one of the finest 4-star luxury castle hotels in Ireland and Kerry’s only Castle Hotel.

Day 4 - Wednesday, April 3, 2019
Bantry to Killarney
Ireland gay tour - Bantry HouseThis morning travel to Cork and visit Bantry House.

Bantry House is the ancestral home of the Earls of Bantry. The title lapsed in 1891 but the House is still owned and lived in by the direct descendant of the 1st Earl of Bantry, Egerton Shelswell-White and his family. It has been open to the public since 1946. The House has an important collection of art treasures mainly collected by the 2nd Earl of Bantry on his Grand Tour. The treasures include a unique collection of French and Flemish tapestries, furniture, and carpets and objects of art. The Garden is laid out in the Italian style over seven terraces, with the house sitting on the third terrace. A Parterre was created facing south surrounding a wisteria circle which again surrounds a fountain. From there rise the famous Hundred Steps, a monumental staircase built of local stone, set amidst azaleas and rhododendron. From the top garden at the top of the stairs, enjoy the stunning views over Bantry Bay.

Ireland gay tour - Garnish IslandNext take a short ferry at Glengarriff to Garnish Island. Garinish is a unique island that plays host to a multitude of plant variations, and the blanket of summer coloring which covers the island creates a rainbow of color. The island has a wonderful history and its unusual micro climate allows a range of exotic subtropical plant species to flourish. There are a number of walks and interesting buildings on the island. On route to the island, visitors will enjoy the magnificent views of the bay and also pass Seal Island with its colony of harbor seals.

Continue on to Killarney. No trip to Ireland is complete without tasting Irish Whiskey. Our choice is the Irish Whiskey Experience where our tasting will be paired with farmhouse cheeses, another specialty of Ireland. Return to the hotel in Tralee.

Ireland Gay Tour - ConnemaraDepart for Ashford Castle Hotel in Mayo.

Continue our journey through the scenic Connemara Region. Connemara is a land of lakes and rivers, bogs and mountains. A land of small villages where Gaelic is still the spoken language and where little has changed since the beginning of time. It is without a doubt the wildest and the most romantic part of Ireland. In 1951, John Ford’s great movie “The Quiet Man” starring John Wayne, Maureen O’Hara and Barry Fitzgerald was made, and filming was centerd in the village of Cong on the Mayo-Galway border.

Next visit Westport House and enjoy afternoon tea, followed by a tour of the house. Westport House is located in a magnificent setting on the shores of Clew Bay. During the 16th century Grace O’Malley, the famous Pirate and “Queen of Connaught”, was chief of the O’Malley Clan and ruled the seas around Mayo. Grace O’Malley had several castles in the west of Ireland and it was on the foundations of one of these that Westport House was built. Colonel John Browne and his wife Maude Bourke built the original house in 1685. The East front (as seen today) was built in 1730 by the famous German architect Richard Cassels. James Wyatt completed the house in 1779 and his large dining room is generally regarded as one of Ireland’s most beautiful rooms.
