Region
This region of Italy was once a Papal State and has many sites of both artistic and historic interest. Besides nearby Acquaviva, there are dozens of small towns and villages which testify to this exceptional heritage. Throughout summer each village has their own programme of fiestas, festivals and historical re-enactments.
Acquaviva Picena
Time seems to have stopped in the narrow, winding streets of this historic town. Acquaviva's ancient origins date back to prehistoric times from Neolithic Age, to the "Picenia Age" with the necropolis rich in excellent funeral sets.
The town developed around the medievall fortress, stronghold of the powerful family of Acquaviva's Dukes. Every stone speaks of the past and there are many monuments of historical and artistic importance: San Rocco's church (13th century), the Gothic Door, the Clock Tower, the Municipal Building with its valuable paintings, the Parish Church, San Lorenzo's Church containing some of Crivelli's paintings and, on nearby hill, San Francesco's Church that tradition says was founded by the famous Assisi Saints.
In the grounds of Hotel Abbadetta is the simple yet beautiful chapel of the Archangel san Michele.
San Benedetto del Tronto
Driving through 5 km Promenade, one of the most gorgeous and suggestive in Italy, you will easily understand why this place has always been called "Riviera of the Palms". There are 7000 palm trees interspersed with flowering oleanders. San Benedetto del Tronto has almost 50'000 inhabitants and is a modern, energetic town. It is one of the most important fishing ports in Italy and has many sports facilities. It is also an up and coming meeting centre with a recently built modern conference centre.
Ascoli Piceno
A town of extraordinary beauty, Ascoli Piceno was founded during the Iron Age (9th century B.C.) when the Piceno people began to differentiate themselves from other parts of the Italian population. From the early beginnings of the city, Travertine stone has been the principal material used in the construction of dwellings, churches and pavements of the squares. The most important one, "People's Square" has magnificent porticoes with 59 arches. They form an aesthetic link with the massive medieval Captain's Palace.
