Post-Cruise Tour Descriptions Taracoles River Adventure Tour Tour date is January 31, 2015 Get a closer look at nature with a boat adventure along the Taracoles River. Near Carara National Park, the river is located in a transitional area dividing two life zones: the tropical dry and tropical humid forests. The mouth of the river is considered by birdwatchers to be one of the main sites for both sea and shore birds, while the upper part is home to the largest crocodile colony in the country (with some crocodiles measuring up to 23 feet in length). The estuary is renowned for its mangrove forests, some of which are most notable on the mid-Pacific coast for the conservation of the Scarlet Macaw. After the cruise, we will enjoy a light lunch before heading north to the city of San Jose and the InterContinental Real. Itinerary:
Poas Volcano and La Paz Waterfall Gardens Tour Tour date is February 1, 2015 Your adventure begins along the Pan-American Highway as you make your way up to the volcano. We pass through stunning scenery, including coffee and sugar plantations, and arrive at the peak of the spectacular cloud- and forest-shrouded Poas Volcano. This is one of the world's most beautiful volcanoes due to its frequent geyser-like eruptions. From the volcano, we will have an authentic Costa Rican lunch with handmade tortillas at Freddo Fresas, our favorite local, family-owned restaurant. Next, we will head to the La Paz Waterfall Gardens, where one can see five magnificent waterfalls tumbling out of the verdant forest. Nine viewing platforms offer you excellent close-up sightings of the falls and the spectacular La Paz River. This is the most visited, privately owned ecological attraction in Costa Rica, featuring the country's most famous waterfalls, a rescued wildlife preserve with over 100 animal species and an environmental education program. The waterfall gardens also boast the largest aviary and enclosed butterfly observatory in the country, where we will view an array of colorful species. It features several animal exhibits, including snakes, reptiles and birds as well as a hummingbird garden (great photography opportunities!). Please bring comfortable shoes, a hat, raincoat, camera and binoculars. The tour includes your entrance fee to the Poas Volcano and La Paz Waterfall Gardens, bottled water on the bus, lunch, tips to the guide and Olivia assistance throughout. This tour is highly recommended as it gives you an opportunity to see some of the fascinating reptile, butterfly, bird, monkey and hummingbird species found in Costa Rica and highlights flora and fauna that you may not necessarily see on the cruise. *Note: Because of the volcano's altitude and the many steps during the walk to the waterfalls, this tour is not recommended for guests with heart conditions and/or limited mobility.
