Greek Isles & Turkish Delights Cruise
August 16 23, 2015
Azamara Club Cruises Azamara Quest
Appreciate the magic of the Aegean Sea on our Greek Isles & Turkish Delights Cruise on board the luxurious, 5-star Azamara Quest with the women of Olivia! With histories and cultures spanning more than 2000 years, it's no wonder that Greece and Turkey are must-see countries.
Istanbul is the gateway to Asia (or to Europe, depending on which direction you're facing), and houses the Blue Mosque, Topkapi Palace and the Haghia Sophia, which was first a church for 1,000 years before becoming a mosque and now a museum. In Lesvos, hang out on the island that gave us one of ancient Greece's greatest poets, Sappho, and enjoy a glass of ouzo (Greece's famous aniseed-flavored spirit). Imagine yourself strolling the streets of Ephesus, the second-largest metropolitan area in the Roman Empire, passing the Temple of Artemis and the Library of Celsus.
Then, relax on the white, red and black sand beaches of Mykonos and Santorini, dine on fresh seafood, sip Greek wine and watch some of the fiercest and fiery sunsets you'll ever see. You'll travel to Chania, Crete, where you will see the intersections of Greek, Venetian and Ottoman influences on every corner through Minoan ruins, Byzantine churches and impressive frescos. Finally, when you debark in Athens, you'll see some of the most impressive, ancient architecture the world has ever known...it dots the hillside and lights up the night sky to remind you that a civilization once so powerful still remains incredibly influential.

Istanbul, Turkey Sunday, August 16, 2015
Once part of the Silk Road, Istanbul's magic lies in its marriage of East and West…it's really the only place you can visit Europe and Asia on the same afternoon. Shop in the Grand Bazaar, a medieval version of a mall, filled with exotic goods from all over the world, or stop along the way in a café for a cup of Turkish coffee or mint tea. The Haghia Sophia, now a museum decorated in 30 million tiny mosaic tiles, was first a church for 1000 years before becoming a mosque, and is a must-see! You can even visit Topkapi, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the palace which housed Ottoman sultans for 400 years.
Mytilini (Lesvos), Greece Monday, August 17, 2015
The birthplace of Sappho and Greece's third-largest island, Lesvos is home to picturesque mountain villages, pastel-hued houses set against pine- and olive-covered slopes, and ouzo, the anise-flavored spirit that is Greece's most popular drink, and for which Lesvos is famous. Along with hiking and cycling, Lesvos is a mecca for bird watching (more than 279 species, ranging from raptors to waders, are often sighted). The island boasts therapeutic hot springs that gush with some of the warmest mineral waters in Europe. Stroll through Mytilini town, or sit along the harbor and enjoy eating fresh-caught seafood while watching life on the docks pass you by.
Kusadasi (Ephesus), Turkey Tuesday, August 18, 2015
Kusadasi is your gateway to one of the most fascinating archaeological sites in the Mediterranean. Ephesus was once the second-largest metropolitan area in the Roman Empire, with a population of 250,000. Walk around this ancient and well-preserved city and see the Temple of Artemis (one of the seven wonders of the ancient world); the Library of Celsus, with its thousands of scrolls; and The Arcadian Way, a street and amphitheater that held over 24,000 people. The port town of Kusadasi also houses relics from the Ottoman Empire, including a 16th century castle on Pigeon Island, The Kaleici Mosque, originally built in 1618, and the Grand Bazaar, a great place to buy Turkish goods.
Mykonos, Greece Wednesday, August 19, 2015
Windswept Mykonos, known as the gay & lesbian hotspot in Greece, is just over 40 square miles of rugged terrain dotted with granite stone, windmills and blinding white-washed buildings -- all bordered by beach and backlit by blue skies. It's also one of the most visited of the Greek islands. You will find tavernas for al fresco dining, ouzo drinking and people watching, and sandy beaches. Nearby island, Ancient Delos, is an archeological marvel accessible by 20-minute boat ride and you'll see luxury yachts bobbing on the light blue Aegean Sea. Take a stroll through Mykonos Town, filled with cobblestone alleys winding through cube-shaped restaurants, residences and boutiques, or visit one of the gay beaches – Paradise, Super Paradise or Elia.
Santorini, Greece Thursday, August 20, 2015
Known as Thira in Greek, Santorini is a volcanic island in the Cyclades of the Aegean Sea. It is famous for dramatic views, stunning sunsets from Oia, the white aubergine (eggplant), its black, red and white sand beaches and its very own active volcano. The capital, Fira, a pedestrian haven with narrow, meandering cobblestone lanes, is reachable only by cable car, donkey, or for the fit and fearless, a flight of 600 steps. Browse the shops and enjoy a lazy lunch with a view, or explore other areas of this beautiful island by visiting the Village of Oia, Pyrgos Village, Boutari Winery or Perivolos Beach.
Chania, Crete, Greece Friday, August 21, 2015
Chania, the second largest city on the island of Crete, is a modern city built over the ruins of the ancient city of Kydonia. Stroll through the old city and you'll see how it has been touched by the intersection of diverse civilizations throughout history, with a mixture of Greek, Venetian and Ottoman influences on every corner through Minoan ruins, Byzantine churches and impressive frescos. If you like archaeology, The Archaeological Museum houses an extensive collection of Minoan and Roman artifacts. The Naval Museum is also great way to explore the ages of Chania, with replicas of ships dating back to the Bronze Age. Discover the Byzantine collection in the restored Venetian Church of San Salvadore, or go into nature at the nearby national park and hike the Samaria Gorge. And if you just want to take it easy, relax at a seaside café and enjoy a glass of Cretan wine and some baklava.
At Sea Saturday, August 22, 2015
It's time to relax, sip a glass of wine or sparkling water and catch up with friends. Get a massage at the spa, sunbathe at the pool, or just sit and enjoy gorgeous views of the Aegean Sea.
Piraeus/Athens, Greece Sunday, August 23, 2015
We end our journey in the iconic city of Athens, one of the foremost examples of ancient Greek architecture and culture. Home of the first Olympics in 776 B.C., as well as the first modern Olympics in 1896, Athens has over 5,000 years of history and ethos. Temples to Greek Gods, looming structures that still stand today and plazas with hundreds of shops, Athens is a city that will keep you interested long after you're gone. Be sure to visit The Acropolis, the ancient "high city" of Athens, crowned by marble temples sacred to the city's goddess Athena. The Parthenon, the Erectheion and the Temple of Nike are the three most important buildings that hold their structure today. And if you love to shop, The Plaka, Monastiraki and Thissio are charming historic districts at the foot of the Acropolis, with restored 19th century neoclassical homes, pedestrianized streets, shops and restaurants.
