Alaska Inside Passage & Glaciers Cruise
May 13 20, 2015
Holland America's ms Volendam
Alaska's Inside Passage truly is nature's last untamed frontier. On this majestic cruise you will see glaciers extending for miles, calving with a thunderous roar as the ice hits the water's surface. You'll begin in Vancouver, a youthful city alive with culture, food and nightlife. In Juneau, spend your time shopping downtown or try out your rugged side while kayaking, dogsledding, rafting, hiking, whale watching, flightseeing or fishing.
Want to learn a little history? Skagway's narrow-gauge railway and old saloons boasts the gold-rush days of yore, and the "Ska-Gay" Town tour has been customized especially for the ladies of Olivia. In Glacier Bay, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, you'll revel in some of the highest mountain peaks and greenest rainforests in North America. You'll capture snapshots of bald eagles soaring, whales gliding, and brown and black bears puttering across the landscape.
Eat your way through Ketchikan – the Salmon Capital of the World. Learn to salmon fish or go on a king crab feast. Or, for the adventurer in you, take a floatplane to scout out Alaskan bears! On your days at sea, rest and relax or listen to a lecture and ask questions of local experts who will be on board to share their knowledge of Alaska's culture, food, and wildlife. Did we forget anything? Oh yes, just that you will experience this journey with 1,450 women just like you.
Your Ship - Holland America's ms Volendam
Designed to provide maximum comfort, the ms Volendam has spacious public areas that boast a sophisticated décor, including the stunning atrium and two-story theater.
From the moment you step on board the ms Volendam you will recognize the Holland America Line difference. Each cruise sails with nearly one crew member for every two guests, providing the gracious, award-winning service that defines classic cruising. Holland America's cruise ships feature spacious wraparound teak decks, panoramic views, abundant spacious private verandahs and large staterooms. The Volendam features Signature of Excellence enhancements to staterooms and public rooms. With elegant fine dining and a casual environment, you will discover timeless cruising, refined for a new generation.
The restaurants range from the casual to the elegant, and the atmosphere onboard is always friendly. There are wide decks for strolling, great sea vistas, and spacious staterooms—many with private verandahs—for relaxing. Step onboard for a first-class trip through the Inside Passage!
The beautiful garden theme of the ms Volendam is reflected in an artful floral motif throughout the ship's spacious public rooms and elegant staterooms. "Flowers" can be found in abundance in the forms of floral fabrics and tapestries, as well as huge vases of tropical floral arrangements and chrysanthemums.
In addition to fresh flowers throughout the ship, Holland America Line has drawn on its collection of incredible artwork to enhance the interior of the ship's public spaces. Everything from pre-Columbian fetishes and sculptures to Renaissance-era fountains imported from Italy are included in its hallway galleries. At the heart of the ship an elegant sculpture by Luciano Vistosi, inspired by the myriad of moods and colors of a kaleidoscope, greets visitors in a soaring three-story atrium.
Some of the ship's other highlights include:
Rotterdam Dining Room: features impeccable service and an extensive wine list. Five-course menus include continental cuisine, vegetarian and low-carb options.

Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada Wednesday, May 13, 2015
Welcome to Vancouver! Consistently rated as one of the world's greatest places to live, this city will enchant you with its breathtaking snowcapped crags, city-hugging beaches and dense waterfront forests. Vancouver is filled with outdoor, museum and gallery attractions that will keep you busy, and the city's gay-friendly Davie Village, in the West End, is a must-see!
Scenic Cruising Inside Passage Thursday, May 14, 2015
Shaped by the staggering force of massive glaciers millions of years ago, Alaska's Inside Passage boasts wildlife-filled fjords and lush green scenery — it's a habitat for bald eagles, sea lions, porpoises and whales. Its mountains are carpeted with majestic forests. The Inside Passage is loaded with history, culture and adventure. It is home to Tlingit, Haida and Tsimshian Indians whose history is reflected in towering totem poles, and Russian settlers left a legacy of onion-domed churches gleaming with icons. Alaskan naturalists will be on board to narrate wildlife sightings as we sail through the passage.
Tracy Arm Fjord Friday, May 15, 2015
As we voyage 45 miles south of Juneau into Tracy Arm, you will delight in the many glaciers and abundance of wildlife in the over-30 miles-long fjord. They are located in the heart of Tongass National Forest, containing 653,179 acres of preserved land. This region is home to abundant wildlife, such as arctic terns, Bonaparte gulls, black and brown bears, deer wolves and mountain goats, and marine life, such as harbor seals and porpoises.
Juneau, Alaska Friday, May 15, 2015
Founded in 1880 as a mining camp, Juneau sits on the Gastineau Channel and is nestled at the base of Mount Juneau. Juneau offers excellent shopping directly adjacent to the ships. South Franklin Street parallels the ships and offers abundant shops, restaurants and bars. Mendenhall Glacier, at 12 miles long, is just one of the 38 major glaciers that flow from the Juneau Icefield, an expanse of interconnected glaciers that sits just behind the mountains next to the city. Juneau is also the best place to whale watch and has the most whale sightings of any port. You can kayak, dogsled, raft, hike, whale watch, flightsee or fish!
Skagway, Alaska Saturday, May 16, 2015
Skagway's boomtown glory days live on as the heart and soul of this small town. Ride the antique White Pass & Yukon narrow-gauge railway, step into the Red Onion Saloon or visit the restored, historic buildings and wooden boardwalks of the Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park, filled with locals in period costumes. Take an excursion and hike the Chilkoot Trail, the main route to the riches of the Klondike during the height of the Gold Rush era. You can even take advantage of the "Ska-Gay" Town tour that has been customized especially for the ladies of Olivia!
Scenic Cruising Glacier Bay Sunday, May 17, 2015
Sailing through Glacier Bay, you travel along shorelines and among islands that were completely covered by ice just over 200 years ago. Today, Glacier Bay National Park and UNESCO World Heritage Site preserves 3.3 million acres of federally protected marine ecosystems, rugged mountains, dynamic glaciers, temperate rainforests, wild coastlines and deep, sheltered fjords. Scan the skies for bald eagles, as this area is home to the highest density of nesting bald eagles in the world. Observe glaciers calving (crashing ice) into the bay—Glacier Bay has more calving tidewater glaciers than any other place in the world. Catch a glimpse into ice ages past as this beautiful, natural landmark is sure to calm your thoughts and excite your senses!
Ketchikan, Alaska Monday, May 18, 2015
Founded as a salmon cannery site in 1885, Ketchikan's livelihood was initially fishing and for years the city was known as the "Canned Salmon Capital of the World." Many shops and houses are built right over the water. Besides the main attractions – Creek Street, the Tongass Historical Museum, Totem Bight State Park and Saxman Village – try a flightseeing trip to Misty Fjords National Monument. This 3,570-square-mile wilderness is a natural mosaic of sea cliffs, steep fjords and rock walls jutting 3,000 feet straight out of the ocean. Trips into the monument, whether by tour boat, small airplane or kayak, provide wildlife sightings like seals, otters, bald eagles and whales.
Scenic Cruising Inside Passage Tuesday, May 19, 2015
Today you'll see wildlife in action! Sea lions love to play and snooze so be sure to look for them. Both humpback whales and orcas live in these waters; keep lookout for breaching, tail-slapping and feeding. There are also many bald eagles perched atop spruce trees or flying overhead. Alaskan naturalists will be on board to narrate wildlife sightings as we sail through the passage.
Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada Wednesday, May 20, 2015
You will disembark this morning and either head home or choose to join us on our post-cruise vacation stretcher to Denali National Park.
