Athens, Greece The Greek capital is one of the world’s oldest cities, with a recorded history spanning back some 3500 years. Reminders of Athens' influence on the development of the Western world are at every corner, the most famous being the Parthenon and the Acropolis, among countless other Roman and Byzantine monuments. Visiting Athens is also a great lesson in the development of modern urban life, from the creation of the basic unit of city planning, the city block, to the expansion of the Athens metro system to accommodate the 2004 Summer Olympics.
