Mediterranean Luxury Cruise Itinerary (Begins in Athens, Greece and ends in Istanbul, Turkey)
Athens (Piraeus), Greece - September 7, 2013
Athens is a city with a most glorious history, a city worshipped by gods and people, a magical city. This enchanting capital of Greece is the city where democracy was born and many of the wise men of ancient times. The architecture of this capital city reveals its history, including the famous Acropolis, that was nominated to be one of the 7 wonders of the world. Athens is a city of different aspects - old mansions, luxurious department stores and small intimate shops, fancy restaurants and traditional taverns, and a vivid nightlife - all have their place in this city.
Skopelos Islands (Scenic Navigation), Greece - September 8, 2013
Also referred to as "Green and Blue" Island, Skopelos is the greenest island in Greece. Here, the green of the pine-trees and the dense forest mix with the deep blue of sea and sky, creating the picture of unrivalled nature beauty, a small paradise in the very heart of Greece.
Skopelos and Skiathos are part of the Sporades island group. Greener and less crowded than the Cyclades islands further south. The producers of the movie "Mama Mia" filmed the movie on these two islands. Weather permitting, we will sail by the headland with the wedding chapel shown in the movie
Skiathos, Greece - September 8, 2013
Another very green island, Skiathos has about 60 beaches one can enjoy. In fact, the rock formations at Lalaria Beach are often featured in travel books on Greece.
The beach scenes in "Mama Mia" were filmed here. We anchor off the attractive Skiathos Town.
Volos, Greece - September 9, 2013
Greek mythology tells us that it is the birthplace of the Centaurs. Today, Volos is one of the largest and most attractive cities in Greece as well as one of the country's most prominent ports. The modern-day city, built near the site of ancient Iolcos, dominates the region of Magnesia from its position at the foot of Mount Pelion overlooking the Pagasetic Gulf. This is one of the most beautiful areas in Thessaly, in the center of Greece.
Volos lies at the foot of Mt.Pelion with it's forests and traditional villages. We dock on the bustling waterfront. We will offer a tour to the monasteries of Meteoro which were features in the James Bond film "For Your Eyes Only".
Mount Athos (Scenic Navigation), Greece - September 10, 2013
Mount Athos is situated in the entire third, eastern and most beautiful peninsula of Halkidiki, called the peninsula of Athos. It is the only place in Greece that is completely dedicated to prayer and worship of God, and for this reason, it is called the Holy Mount.
The Holy Mount is about 50 Km in length, 8 to 12 Km in width and it covers an area of about 350 square kilometres.
The borders of the monasterial city are defined on the ground by an imaginary line that starts from the location "FRAGOKASTRO" in the West coast and reaches the cape "ARAPIS" in the opposite end.
The natural beauty of the peninsula is extraordinary. The highest point of Mount Athos is like a huge cone, reaching 2033 metres in height. It's a naked, treeless crest that seems to lance the sky and its slopes are fully covered by ancient evergreens. All these help to create an area of incomparable natural beauty.
Thassos Island, Greece - September 10, 2013
Thassos is a green Greek island in the Aegean Sea famous for its clean beaches, hospitality, its tasty wine and its magnificent honey. The history of Thassos goes all the way back to antiquity. At that time, Thassos was famous for its goldmines and marble. Still today, you can see many of its archaeological treasures, which will make your journey something special. Also the giant marble factories, which export the snow white marble around the whole world, will amaze you.
A popular holiday destination for Greeks, but little know outside Greece. We hope to arrange a beach party on Thassos.
Kavala, Greece - September 11, 2013
Kavala, the prefectural capital, is one of the most attractive of Greece's largest cities, rising like an ampitheatre from the beautiful harbor up to a huge Byzantine fortress. Built on the ancient city of Neopolis, the city's population doubled in 1922 when the Greeks from Asia minor made there way here during the exchange of populations. The spacious squares, contemporary buildings, and shopping centres on the west side of the city form a pleasant contrast to the traditional old houses, tiny gardens and flagged alleyways of the eastern side. The harbour is particularly picturesque with its countless brightly coloured fishing caiques moored along the waterfront. Among the city's impressive landmarks are the old walls, the Byzantine castle, and the Kamares - the aqueduct erected by Suleiman the Magnificent in the 16th century, Mehmet Ali's house (18th century) and the Imaret, a Turkish building.
Kepez (Troy & Gallipoli), Turkey - September 12, 2013
While Kepez is a seaside town in Canakkale Province, Turkey, the main reason history buffs come here is to see the ruins of the lost city of Troy. Archaeological digs have revealed nine cities and various ruins of the city walls, typical house foundations, a temple and a theater. The movie, however, was filmed in Malta.
Istanbul, Turkey - September 13, 2013
Historically known as Constantinople, Istanbul is the largest city in Turkey and fifth largest city proper in the world with a population of 12.8 million, also making it the second largest metropolitan area in Europe by population. Istanbul was chosen as a European Capital of Culture for 2010. Historic areas of of the city were added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1985.
