Istanbul, Turkey
Indulge your eyes and senses in this magnificent city astride two continents. Visit beautiful Topkapi Palace, the awesome St. Sophia and the impressive Blue Mosque. Cruise the Bosphorus to see the city and its surroundings from another perspective. Visit one of the many museums, stroll through the spice market and the famous Grand Bazaar.
The Grand Bazaar is a splendid cornucopia of leather and shearling, world famous hand-made carpets, jewelry, souvenirs, tin and copper items - just about anything you can imagine.
Savor a simmering kebab, fresh-caught fish and sweet, sticky baklava washed down with thick Turkish coffee.
Kusadasi, Turkey
Meander through the ruins of ancient Ephesus and marvel at the famed Library of Celsus, the huge amphitheater, the marble roads with their chariot marks, the amazing mosaic sidewalks and the superb, rarely opened Terrace Houses. Or, journey to three monumental cities of antiquity - Priene, Miletus and Didyma, renowned for their majestic temples and impressive, beautifully preserved stadiums.
Visit Kusadasi's bazaar and nearby shops for spices, apple tea, luxurious handmade carpets and antique jewelry.
Savor fresh fish caught this morning or a spicy kebab, complemented by a sticky sweet dessert!
Limassol, Cyprus
Limassol is the jumping off point to explore the ancient riches of Cyprus. See ruins, vast groves of lemons, oranges and olives, majestic mountains and scenery, and stunning beaches. Visit Lemesos Castle, where Richard-the-Lionheart married Berengaria of Navarre, and its fascinating museum. Or stroll through ancient Curium and admire its stunning mosaics, theater, basilica and panoramic views over the sea. Venture inland to Nicosia and its wonders, like the Cathedral of St. John, the Venetian fortifications, a restored old town and mosque and the Museum.
Take home some lovely lace, copper items, jewelry and pottery.
Enjoy a selection of appetizers so extensive it can be a hearty meal as well as fresh seafood accompanied by a delicious glass of wine.
Haifa, Israel
Visit the land of miracles - Galilee, the Jordan River, the Mount of the Beautitudes and Tabgha, or venture to Nazareth, home of the young Jesus. See the largest hanging gardens in the world at the Bahai Gardens of Haifa.
The Panorama Center in Central Carmel offers some of the country's best clothing stores. For antiques and crafts, head to the boutiques on Massada Street. South of Haifa, the artists’ village of Ein Hod offers hand-blown glass, pottery, silver, gold, and crafts.
From French to Continental to Middle Eastern cuisine, dining choices abound. Fresh fish and grilled lamb dishes are the highlight. The best dessert is homemade kanafeh, a traditional ancient dish of baked sweet cheese, pistachio and honey.
Cairo (Port Said), Egypt
Travel to Cairo and marvel at the Giza pyramids and Sphinx standing at the edge of the vast Sahara. Visit the fabulous Egyptian Museum and see its awesome collection of artifacts or head for Alexandria and its ancient sites and museums.
Browse Cairo's bazaar for unusual jewelry like Eye of Horus amulets, hand-painted papyrus copies of ancient tomb paintings, glass, alabaster and artifact replicas. Or find an ancient relic approved for export.
Relax over a cup of sweet tea and sample delicious vegetable appetizers or some spicy lamb kebabs, a typical Middle Eastern dish.
Alexandria (Cairo), Egypt
Founded by its namesake, Alexander the Great in 332 B.C., Alexandria has been home to many historical figures, including Cleopatra, Mark Antony, Julius Caesar and Euclid. Today the city has a distinctly Mediterranean feel, perhaps a remainder of its ancient Roman connection. The charming seaside promenade, colonial buildings and wide avenues make it an exotic, romantic destination.
As with most of Egypt, the historical landmarks here are a must-see. Take time to explore the Roman Amphitheatre, Pompei's Pillar and the Catacombs of Kom ash-Shuqqafa, dating back to the second century A.D.
Aghios Nikolaos (Crete), Greece
Explore this charming town, discover fascinating ancient Minoan and Byzantine villages, and see the panorama of lovely windmills irrigating meticulously cultivated fields. Visit a monastery or head across the island to see the re-constituted Palace of Knossos.
Take home lovely handmade tablecloths, rugs, olive wood products, jewelry, honey and a variety of other handicrafts.
Enjoy delicious grilled lamb, fresh seafood or tempting assortments of cold appetizers accompanied by a glass of local wine.
Valletta, Malta
Discover the myriad cultural layers of Malta, from its amazing prehistoric temples at Tarxien to beautiful, walled medieval Mdina, nearby Rabat and Marsaxlokk, a colorful fishing village. Admire the stunning scenery and wander through imposing churches, down the streets of fortified towns where the Knights of St. John once held sway.
Take home hand-blown glass, unique limestone carvings, hand-made lace and superbly worked gold and silver filigree jewelry.
Enjoy thick soups, lamb, fish and traditional dishes like fenkata (rabbit stewed in wine) or bragioli (slow cooked stuffed slices of beef).
La Goulette, Tunisia
Travel across millennia as you visit the ruins of ancient Carthage and Tunis's opulent, historic medina with its winding alleys and souks. Visit the superb Bardo Museum with its spectacular Roman mosaics or the lovely whitewashed village of Sidi Bou Saïd perched on a cliff above the sea, a charming spot of cobbled streets, flower-filled courtyards and ornate window grills painted deep blue.
Enjoy looking for interesting jewelry, caftans, inlaid boxes and ornate trinkets.
Try some local spicy dishes, usually with lamb, and sweet desserts.
