Miami, Florida

Western Europe Transatlantic Gay cruise from Miami, Florida The beauty of South Beach's art deco architecture and sparkling beaches are set against a rich backdrop provided by the flavor of the Latin community. Come nightfall, Miami doesn't merely go out, it enthusiastically celebrates the onset of every evening with a passion that you'll find contagious.

The city of Miami is a young metropolis known for its beautiful beaches, exciting club scene and Latin American cultural influence. Miami-Dade County has a population of approximately 2.5 million. The area has grown immensely since its founding in 1897 due to immigration and an influx of American "snowbirds" escaping cold northern climates. While some follow the heavy music beats of the South Beach nightlife, others are drawn to the city's relaxed sub-tropical lifestyle. Evidenced in its politics, culture, and attractions, Miami is the gateway to the Florida Keys and the Caribbean and Latin America.

Miami, meaning "big river," is named for the river that runs through the heart of the city. It has played an influential role in the Miami's history. The Tequesta Indians originally inhabited the area. Oil tycoon, railroad baron and developer Henry Flagler extended his Florida East Coast Railway down to what was at the time an unincorporated little village. He promptly went to work building Miami.

Western Europe Transatlantic Gay cruise from Miami, Florida South Florida's subtropical climate and environment are a huge attraction for scientists, nature lovers, and outdoor enthusiasts. To say that Miami is a sports crazy town would be a bit of an understatement. The city has hosted the annual Orange Bowl football game since 1937. The Hurricanes of the University of Miami have won many national championships in football and baseball. The Miami Dolphins still proudly boast of their 1972 "perfect season". The young Florida Marlins have already won the World Series, the Miami Heat has won the NBA Championship and the Florida Panthers have brought home professional hockey's coveted Stanley Cup.

Since its beginnings as a Spanish colonial outpost Miami has retained its Latin flavor in its demographics, culinary scene, and cultural traditions. Miami's connections with the Caribbean, especially Cuba, date back to the days of pirate attacks on colonial merchant ships leaving the Americas. The stories of ship wrecks and buried treasure, both lost and found, have become imbedded in South Florida lore. Pirates, rum runners and the "Miami Vice" image of speed spiced with beauty, a touch of danger and intrigue to the music of a steamy Latin beat all come together to make one of the youngest cities in America one of the most exciting.

San Juan, Puerto Rico

Post-Thanksgiving Caribbean Gay cruise - San Juan, Puerto Rico While San Juan is a vibrant, modern port city, it also has one foot anchored proudly in the past, dating back to its time as a Spanish colonial outpost. Many of the old structures, including forts and cathedrals, date back to the early 16th century and the conquest by Juan Ponce de León in 1508.

When you're in San Juan, don't miss the opportunity to witness the pinnacle of natural beauty by exploring Puerto Rico's El Yunque Rain Forest. It features more than 240 species of trees, hundreds of miniature orchids, and what was once believed to be the Fountain of Youth.

See Bano Grande, a natural swimming pool. Then take a walk on Camitillo Trail and look for the artificial nest of the Puerto Rican parrot and the flora and fauna of the Palo Colorado forest.

Explore Old San Juan, the second-oldest European settlement in the New World. Ride to San Felipe El Morro, the most dramatic of all the city's military fortifications. Visit the Casa Blanca Museum & Gardens, the Ballaja Barracks, Quincentennial Square, San Jose Church, San Juan Cathedral, and Cristo Chapel.

Monte Carlo,
some 6 miles from Villefranche, belongs to the Principality of Monaco and is governed independently, although the way of life is distinctively French. Known as the play-ground of the rich, it is famous for its wealth. Monaco is ruled by Prince Albert II, a direct descendant of the Grimaldi family, who have reigned since 1275.

Philipsburg, St. Maarten

Post-Thanksgiving Caribbean Gay Group cruise - Philipsburg, St. Maarten St. Maarten has two sides-a French and a Dutch. You can stroll along the magnificent beaches for hours, browse the endless French boutiques and duty-free shops, or visit sights like the cliffs and caves of Cupecoy Beach.

Philipsburg is the capital of Dutch St. Maarten. It a popular port of call for cruise ships, a center for duty free shopping and the commercial hub of the island.

Though the island is basically divided in half, between the north and the south, visitors will not find any border crossings or passport control stations. Once the French and Dutch got everything worked out by treaty in the early 1700s the two countries have cooperated and gotten along well ever since.

Post-Thanksgiving Caribbean Gay Group cruise - Philipsburg, St. MaartenThe Dutch side of the island is to the south. Though it is relaxed, there is more of an activity oriented atmosphere. There are many popular beaches where swim suits are actually worn (optional on French beaches), numerous casinos and a vibrant partying nightlife.

In the north, the French side of the island is casual, elegant and peaceful. Marigot is the capital where the smell of freshly baked baguettes combines with the fresh scent of tropical flowers floating on the sea air. It has world class shopping as well as restaurants and cafes that serve some of the best food imaginable.

Both St. Maarten and St. Martin are wonderful and the people are as genuinely warm and inviting as the weather.

Basseterre, St. Kitts

Post-Thanksgiving Caribbean Gay Group cruise visiting Basseterre, St. Kitts With a town square fashioned after London's Piccadilly Circus, St. Kitts blends the gentrified feel of a European capital with island ease. For centuries, the island was well known as one of the region's largest producers of sugarcane.

The Carib Indians called the island Liamuiga, meaning "fertile land". Christopher Columbus named the island after his own patron saint, Christopher, during his second voyage to the New World in 1493. The British established their first Caribbean colony on the island in 1624. It was the British who began to call the island St. Kitts (a nick name for Christopher). The French arrived in 1625 and went on to establish Basseterre two years later. It did not take long for the town to become a vital port.

Post-Thanksgiving Caribbean Gay Group cruise visiting Basseterre, St. KittsThe fact that Basseterre has survived over the centuries is a testament to human perseverance. Looted, pillaged, plundered and burned to the ground by French forces when held by the British who returned the favor when held by the French. The town has been washed out to sea by floods, shaken to its foundation by earthquakes, virtually blown off the map time and again by hurricanes, and transformed from riches to rags when the sugar plantation economy collapsed. It has only been in the past few decades that tourism has helped to revitalize the city and island.

Today Basseterre is a bustling, pedestrian friendly port town with many shops and boutiques, cafés and restaurants and some of the best restored and preserved colonial period architecture to be found in the Caribbean.
