Fort Lauderdale, Florida
This port city has been called the "Venice of America" due to a comprehensive canal network where you'll find gondolas docked on the Himmarshee Canal off Las Olas Boulevard. Enjoy extensive strolling, shopping, and dining opportunities, as well as the best of sand and sun.
Fort Lauderdale has a well deserved image as one of America's premier playgrounds. Over 10 million visitors a year prove it. The main attraction of Fort Lauderdale is water, lots of water. In Fort Lauderdale, in one way or another it's all about the water. The blue Atlantic, the Intracoastal Waterway and the New River combine with so many miles of man-made canals even Venice Italy calls itself the Ft. Lauderdale of Europe.
With so much navigable water throughout the city, Ft. Lauderdale has grown into America's yachting capital. A massive boating and marine support industry provides tens of thousands jobs and port and marina facilities to countless boats big and small. The city's nautical highlight takes place at the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show. The world's largest; the show annually draws many thousands from around the globe.
Today, on the banks of the New River between the everglades and the Atlantic, the city which began as an insignificant outpost has grown into one of the most beautiful and dynamic communities in the nation.
Fort Lauderdale Beach
was discovered in 1960 by college students looking for sun and fun during their Spring holiday. The city has long shed its rowdy "Spring Break" image and has developed into one of the premiere family resort locations in the country. Fort Lauderdale takes great care of and pride in its beach. The results are wonderfully self evident.
Carrie B
The Paddle Wheeler "Carrie B" takes visitors along the famous Intracoastal Waterway and the New River. Passing amazing private yachts and stately homes, this is a great way to see the city whose life revolves around the water.
Bonnet House Museum and Gardens
The Bonnet House Museum and Gardens is the result of a love story between two early pioneers in Fort Lauderdale, Frederic and Evelyn Bartlett. This dignified yet inviting home with its wonderful gardens is one of the most beautiful sites in South Florida. The estate dates from the early 1900s and is included in the Florida Trust for Historic Preservation as well as the National Register of Historic Places.
Stranahan House
The Stranahan House is one of the earliest permanent buildings constructed in Ft. Lauderdale. Constructed on the banks of the New River in 1901, the house served many functions, both private and public. Now on the National Registry of Historic Places, the house has been beautifully restored and serves as a museum dedicated to the early days of Ft. Lauderdale.
Museum of Discovery and Science
The Museum of Discovery and Science is home to hundreds of interesting exhibits and displays. There are living coral reefs as well as animals and reptiles from the Everglades. From rocks to rockets the museum has a great collection of interactive presentations. Combined with an IMAX movie theater, the museum is a very popular attraction.
Everglades
The Everglades is an amazing "sea of grass" and one of the most uniquely beautiful eco-environments in the United States. Visitors have the opportunity to explore the vast array of plant and animal life which combines to make this one of Florida's protected treasures.
San Juan, Puerto Rico
While San Juan is a vibrant, modern port city, it also has one foot anchored proudly in the past, dating back to its time as a Spanish colonial outpost. Many of the old structures, including forts and cathedrals, date back to the early 16th century and the conquest by Juan Ponce de León in 1508.
Called "La Ciudad Amurallada", San Juan was founded in 1521. In 1508 Juan Ponce de Leon founded the original settlement, Caparra, behind the almost land-locked harbor just to the west of the present metropolitan area. The settlement was abandoned and moved to the site of what is now called Old San Juan.
San Juan is one of the biggest and best natural harbors in the Caribbean and is the second oldest city in the Americas. San Juan is a major port and tourist resort of the West Indies and is the oldest city under the U.S flag. The metropolitan area known as San Juan has 3 distinct areas: Old San Juan, the Beach & Resort area, and other outlying communities, the most important: Río Piedras, Hato Rey, Puerta de Tierra, and Santurce. Río Piedras was founded in 1714 but became incorporated into San Juan in 1951.
During the early 16th century, San Juan was the point of departure of Spanish expeditions to charter or settle unknown parts of the New World. Its fortifications repulsed the English navigator Sir Francis Drake in 1595, as well as later attacks. In the 20th century the city expanded beyond its walled confines, known as Old San Juan, to incorporate suburban Miramar, Santurce, Condado, Hato Rey and Río Piedras.
San Juan is the largest processing center of the island, the metropolitan area has facilities for petroleum and sugar refining, brewing and distilling and produces cement, pharmaceuticals, metal products clothing, and tobacco. The port is one of the busiest in the Caribbean. San Juan is the country's financial capital, and many U.S. banks and corporations maintain offices or distributing centers there. San Juan is center of Caribbean shipping and is the 2nd largest sea port in the area (after New York City).
Old San Juan is a 465-year-old neighborhood originally conceived as a military stronghold. Its 7-square-block area has evolved into a charming residential and commercial district. The streets here are paved with cobbles of adoquine, a blue stone cast from furnace slag; they were brought over a ballast on Spanish ships and time and moisture have lent them their characteristic color. Includes more than 400 carefully restored 16th- and 17th-century Spanish colonial buildings.
The Old San Juan attracts many tourists, who also enjoy the gambling casinos, fine beaches, and tropical climate. More tourists visit San Juan each year than any other spot in the Caribbean. A leisurely foot tour is advisable for those who really want to experience this bit of the Old World, especially given the narrow, steep streets and frequently heavy traffic. To really do justice to these wonderful old sites, you'll need two mornings or a full day.
Basseterre, St. Kitts
With a town square fashioned after London's Piccadilly Circus, St. Kitts blends the gentrified feel of a European capital with island ease. For centuries, the island was well known as one of the region's largest producers of sugarcane.
The Carib Indians called the island Liamuiga, meaning "fertile land". Christopher Columbus named the island after his own patron saint, Christopher, during his second voyage to the New World in 1493. The British established their first Caribbean colony on the island in 1624. It was the British who began to call the island St. Kitts (a nick name for Christopher). The French arrived in 1625 and went on to establish Basseterre two years later. It did not take long for the town to become a vital port.
The fact that Basseterre has survived over the centuries is a testament to human perseverance. Looted, pillaged, plundered and burned to the ground by French forces when held by the British who returned the favor when held by the French. The town has been washed out to sea by floods, shaken to its foundation by earthquakes, virtually blown off the map time and again by hurricanes, and transformed from riches to rags when the sugar plantation economy collapsed. It has only been in the past few decades that tourism has helped to revitalize the city and island.
Today Basseterre is a bustling, pedestrian friendly port town with many shops and boutiques, cafés and restaurants and some of the best restored and preserved colonial period architecture to be found in the Caribbean.
Philipsburg, St. Maarten
St. Maarten has two sides-a French and a Dutch. You can stroll along the magnificent beaches for hours, browse the endless French boutiques and duty-free shops, or visit sights like the cliffs and caves of Cupecoy Beach.
Philipsburg is the capital of Dutch St. Maarten. It a popular port of call for cruise ships, a center for duty free shopping and the commercial hub of the island.
Though the island is basically divided in half, between the north and the south, visitors will not find any border crossings or passport control stations. Once the French and Dutch got everything worked out by treaty in the early 1700s the two countries have cooperated and gotten along well ever since.
The Dutch side of the island is to the south. Though it is relaxed, there is more of an activity oriented atmosphere. There are many popular beaches where swim suits are actually worn (optional on French beaches), numerous casinos and a vibrant partying nightlife.
In the north, the French side of the island is casual, elegant and peaceful. Marigot is the capital where the smell of freshly baked baguettes combines with the fresh scent of tropical flowers floating on the sea air. It has world class shopping as well as restaurants and cafes that serve some of the best food imaginable.
Both St. Maarten and St. Martin are wonderful and the people are as genuinely warm and inviting as the weather.
